PHILADELPHIA TOMLINSON QUAKERS, My Focus Generation

PHILADELPHIA TOMLINSON QUAKERS, My Focus Generation

My Tomlinson Trek started with something tangible. Fortunately my Grandparents, William (Jr.) and Lucy (Phelps) Tomlinson saved their 1894 Marriage booklet and through my Father, handed it down to me. Their wish to have the attending relatives sign the book provided my research with parents, aunts, uncles and siblings to find in subsequent genealogy records.  Lucy also used the booklet to record some vital dates for her relatives. Thus my history ‘trek’ started with William Tomlinson (1869-1940), born in Pennsylvania, and his father and grandparents all from Philadelphia. My leads took me to the 1860 Census for Philadelphia[i] for a Tomlinson family to include Cath. (Catherine) age 58, Jessie R. (age 30),  Ruben (28), Bailey (24), Lydia (22), William (21), Ezikel (18) and Eliza (16).  Several years of research and many source records later confirmed that this was my Tomlinson family.

Catherine was found to be a Gaulbert, also a Philadelphia family, a Quaker and married to a John Tomlinson, who presumably died before 1860. Their religion meant being recorded in Quaker meetings over many years. These records[ii] revealed more children, who were out of the home for the 1860 Census. These were George W. (b.1823), John S. (b.1825), and Susanna (b. 1829). Also a Daniel is referenced elsewhere as a possible child for Catherine and John born c.1844. This makes a total of 11 births.
My goal is to discover the individual histories of this generation, discover their work, families, children, and where laid to rest. As these biographies take shape, I will post to this Blog.
